Does Tallymail work with Gmail or only Outlook?

Tallymail works with both Outlook and Gmail. Gmail support shipped on 11 October 2026 and is currently available to pilot users in Google’s Testing Mode (100-user cap) ahead of full public verification.

At a glance

  • Outlook: fully live. All plans. Microsoft Graph Mail.Read scope. Signs in with Microsoft 365, personal Microsoft, or Office 365 for Enterprise.
  • Gmail: live for the pilot. All plans. Google gmail.readonly scope. Signs in with a personal Google account or a Google Workspace account.
  • Public rollout for Gmail: expected within 4-6 weeks of Google OAuth verification. Join the pilot by signing up at tallymail.io or emailing help@tallymail.io.

How Tallymail talks to Gmail

The workflow mirrors the Outlook side. You click Sign in with Google on the Tallymail dashboard, grant read-only access to your mailbox, and Tallymail starts scanning your sent and received mail against the clients and matters you have set up. Each email is scored for billable minutes based on word count and your hourly rate; you review and save the ones that count.

What Tallymail reads from Gmail

Metadata (subject, sender, recipient, send and receive time, message ID), the body preview (first ~255 characters), and the full body only transiently when you open an email in Tallymail. Full bodies are never written to the database. The scope requested is gmail.readonly only. No send, modify, delete, label, or Drive access.

What Tallymail does not do

Does not read Gmail Drafts, labels or filters. Does not touch Google Calendar, Contacts or Drive. Does not transfer Gmail content to anyone other than the sub-processors required to deliver the feature (Supabase for metadata storage only; OpenAI only when you opt in to AI narratives). No advertising. No machine-learning training on your mail.

Encryption at rest

Google OAuth tokens are encrypted at the application layer with AES-256-GCM, on top of the volume-level encryption Supabase provides. Same posture as the Microsoft tokens.

Security posture

Tallymail has prepared the Gmail restricted-scope CASA Tier 1 self-assessment pack for Google verification (full policy at tallymail.io/legal, section 2.11a). Until Google issues the verified badge, Gmail users will see Google’s standard ‘Google hasn’t verified this app’ warning on first sign-in. This is normal for apps in Testing Mode and is removed once verification completes.

Switching providers

If you first signed in with Microsoft and later signed in with Google (or the other way round), Tallymail routes your mailbox scan to the provider you most recently signed in with. You stay in the same tenant, so your matters, time entries and billing records carry across untouched.

Bottom line

If your firm is on Microsoft 365 or Outlook, you can use Tallymail today. If your firm is on Gmail or Google Workspace, you can use Tallymail today in the pilot and will see the public, verified version within weeks. Pricing, features and plans are identical across both providers.
